AIDS & HIV Editorial Review
"The Real AIDS Epidemic: How the Tragic HIV Mistake Threatens Us All" is a thought-provoking book that explores the hard questions surrounding HIV and AIDS. The author, Joan Shenton, sheds light on the sociological impact of HIV testing and how it is used to label and marginalize vulnerable populations. The book also contains a discussion of PrEP, which is a new phenomenon not discussed elsewhere in the so-called 'AIDS Dissident' literature. Although the reissued edition is not as strong as the first edition, with most of the new material taking the form of a rambling 35-page foreword that could have used a stronger editor, it is still an essential read for anyone impacted by HIV and AIDS. However, there are a few errors in the book upon which detractors will pounce, and the "Suggested Further Reading/Viewing" list omits the fantastic 2009 documentary "House of Numbers." Overall, the book provides an eye-opening perspective on the AIDS epidemic and raises critical questions about conventional understanding of the disease.
