Customer Questions & Answers
-
Question:
What is fiberglass lath and how is it used in construction?
Answer: Fiberglass lath is a material used primarily for reinforcing stucco and other coatings on walls. It's composed of a grid-like structure made from fiberglass, making it lightweight yet highly durable. This type of lath provides excellent adhesion for stucco applications, ensuring a stable base that prevents cracking and enhances longevity. When applied over exterior wall surfaces, it offers a reliable means of bonding the stucco, which contributes to the overall resilience of the structure against weather elements. -
Question:
How does fiberglass lath compare to traditional metal lath?
Answer: Fiberglass lath is an excellent alternative to traditional metal lath, particularly because it does not rust, ensuring a longer lifespan in moist or coastal environments. Where metal may corrode over time, fiberglass remains strong and effective, providing consistent support for stucco applications. Additionally, fiberglass lath is lighter, which simplifies handling and installation, thus saving time on labor. Its unique self-furring design also helps create a space for better material bonding. -
Question:
Can fiberglass lath be used in high-humidity areas?
Answer: Yes, fiberglass lath is particularly well-suited for high-humidity areas. Unlike metal lath, which can corrode in humid conditions, fiberglass lath retains its structural integrity and performance. Its non-rusting properties make it ideal for climates where moisture is prevalent, ensuring that the stucco maintains its strength and appearance over time. This makes it a go-to choice for coastal homes and structures near water. -
Question:
What size projects can 300 sq ft of fiberglass lath cover?
Answer: A 300 sq ft roll of fiberglass lath is typically sufficient for moderate-sized projects, such as small homes, sheds, and accent walls. When planning your application, consider that the coverage may vary depending on the wall layout and any cutting for corners or windows. This amount is suitable for both DIY renovations and professional applications, allowing for flexibility in various construction scenarios. -
Question:
Is fiberglass lath environmentally friendly?
Answer: Fiberglass lath is considered environmentally friendly due to its long lifespan and recyclability. Its durability means fewer replacements over time, reducing waste in landfills. Additionally, it can be manufactured with eco-conscious methods, enhancing its green credentials. For environmentally aware builders and homeowners, choosing fiberglass lath aligns with sustainable building practices as it contributes to longer-lasting structures. -
Question:
Can I use fiberglass lath for interior applications?
Answer: While fiberglass lath is primarily designed for exterior stucco applications, it can also be used for certain interior projects, particularly when moisture resistance is required. If you're working on areas prone to high humidity, like bathrooms or kitchens, fiberglass lath can provide a strong backup for plaster or other wall materials. Its unique properties make it versatile for various construction needs. -
Question:
How do you install fiberglass lath?
Answer: Installing fiberglass lath involves a few straightforward steps. First, prepare the surface by ensuring it’s clean and free of debris. Next, cut the lath to fit your desired area and attach it using screws or nails suitable for your substrate. Be sure to overlap the edges for proper bonding during stucco application. This lath’s self-furring design allows it to create a natural gap for stucco, enhancing adhesion and durability once completed. -
Question:
What are the benefits of self-furring fiberglass lath?
Answer: Self-furring fiberglass lath includes built-in furring strips that promote an even layer of stucco or plaster. This design feature helps to create a space between the lath and the stucco, allowing for better drainage and ventilation. This ensures that moisture doesn’t get trapped, thus reducing the risk of damage over time. These benefits make self-furring fiberglass lath an ideal choice for enhancing the durability and lifespan of wall finishes. -

SpiderLath Editorial Review
SpiderLath is a fiberglass lath, stucco netting, and stucco mesh used as a non-rusting metal lath alternative. The product is self-furring, and its roll covers an area of 300 sq ft, which makes it perfect for big projects like whole-house installations. The installation process is easy, according to customers who have used it in the past. The strips on the lath are spaced horizontally every six inches apart, and fasteners should be placed vertically into every stud (16" or 24"). A washer for the screw is required to hold the lath. The installation instructions can be found on the SpiderLath website. One customer enquired about the product's ability to allow for better Wi-Fi penetration through stucco walls than traditional wire lathe. Since it is non-metallic, it presents very little attenuation compared to metal lath, according to another customer, but both methods of installation apply the same amount of mortar. Dense substrates like mortar do attenuate wi-fi signals. Another customer asked if the product required solid backing or if it would accept a sprayed-on coat of fiber crete on a skeletal frame. Without a backing, a scratch coat can't be applied to determine the depth of spray that needs to be put on. According to the same customer, the stone adheres to the spiderlath and the backing, and without a backing, all the stone weight would hang on the spiderlath and be flimsy. Reviews of the product reveal that it is quicker and easier to install than metal lath, providing better results. Customers love it, and some have done their whole house in stone veneer using Spiderlath.
