- An osmotic laxative, which holds water to soften stool and increase the number of bowel movements. Generally produces a bowel movement in 1 to 3 days. Grit free, sugar free and gluten free, this unflavored laxative powder dissolves in any beverage. Available without a prescription. We conducted a prospective, randomized controlled trial with children age 2–21 yrs. undergoing elective colonoscopy.Patients were randomly assigned to receive Miralax for either one or three days. Children with known electrolyte disturbances, dehydration, fecal impaction, metabolic or renal disease were excluded. A metabolic panel was monitored before and after bowel preparation. Subjects reported the tolerability and side effects of Miralax via a survey.Effectiveness of the bowel preparation was assessed using a stool diary and a bowel cleansing scale during colonoscopy. Glycol, commonly like those of polyethylene, PEG, has a low toxicity with systemic absorption less than 0.5%. Peg refers to an oligomer or polymer of ethylene oxide and water. The general molecular formula for PEG is H (och2ch2) Noh, where N represents the number of ethylene glycol units contained in the polymer peg, this ranges from 300 grams per mole to 10,000,000 grams per mole.The molecular weight in Turn determines the characteristics of each type or Category of Peg. Low molecular weight Pegs, containing two-to-four ethylene glycol units per fine or polymer, are clear, aquatic viscosity liquids (polyethylene glycol 200, 300, 400, 600). Tweezers containing up to 700 units of ethylene glycol are clear, thick liquids.Tweezers having 1000 or more units of ethylene glycol are Waxy solids.
